The Castle of Tavi of Leonforte
The Castle of Tavi is placed on a cliff near Leonforte (Enna).
By the local parlance, it’s named “u Castiddazzu”. It probably has Byzantine origins, and was subsequently fortified by Arab, then by Norman people.
According to the tradition, Tavi or Tavaca was the name of an ancient sicilian settlement, later destroyed, placed near the more ancient side of the current Leonforte, exactly named Granfonte.
The Castle of Tavi rests upon a rocky hill (517 mt) and it supervises on Crisa’s Valley and all the founts which are the big richness of this territory.
Idrisi, in 1154, talks about it like a “ beautiful castle and high fortress”.
After a lot of property transfer, the fortress, surely busy during the Ruggero I of Altavilla’s reign, sets out its decline, at the same time of Leonforte’s foundation, in 1614.
Observing the hill where the Castle is, we see the ruins of the ancient walls that still present a triangular shaped window, some underground environment and a oil mill excavated in the rock.
Castle’s property is actually private and it can be reached by Favara street from Leonforte.
