| The Castle of Sperlinga |
|
The Castle of Sperlinga (Enna), overlooks the main square of the town, Piazza Castello.
The fortress, escaved in the rock, dates back to medieval age and presents steep stairs also escaved in the rock leading to the principal entry and still having signes of a drawbridge. From the entry, by a vestibule, you can get a bow access in which you can find this engraving “ Quod Siculis placuit, sola Sperlinga negavit”: it means the missed intervention of Sperlinga in the Vesper War. Inside the Castle there are some rooms escaved in the rock, today without roofs. Through them it’s possible getting the west square where are the ruins of the next St. Lucia’ Church, open to visit till 1610 and then became a private chapel of castle’s owners. Through mangers and prisons, it’s also possible entry in “Duke’s Garden”, in the north side. At the base of the Castle there is a big cave, today “Ethno-Anthropological Museum” where are exposed utensiles of farmers culture. Currently It’s possible to visit the Castle, now rinovated and property of municipality. To get Sperlinga from Highway Palermo-Catania, you have to take the exit Leonforte-Nicosia and then to take the SS 1120 between Gangi and Nicosia. |
