The Norman Castle of Cerami, placed in the center of the city, overlooks the valleys beneath from a chalky hill, 1050 mt. high.
The fortress, which capitalized this strategic position, was built by the Count Ruggero and it is one of the most interesting examples of castle architecture in the Medieval age all over the Sicily. It shows a perfect integration by natural and architectural elements. The fortress had a lot of owners which modified and enlarged it many times. Today the castle belongs to privates, but municipality is acquiring a part of it.It is possible to visit a few ruins and some parts of the walls, made up of stones and a lot of mortar. The few ruins has moreover undergone some construction works of a town water tank which bears down on the structure. |
