The Medieval Castle of Aidone
The Medieval Castle of Aidone dominates the Vally of Gornalunga River, on a 889 metres tall rocky hill, at the periphery of the downtown at the bottom of Via Castello.
Some thinkers say the “Castellaccio” is a Saracen fortress, but it surely goes back to Normann era.
From 1411 the Castle was lived by White Queen of Navarra who received here giftes by citizens.
During the Vespro War the “inexpugnable” fortress, so called by popular tradition, gave hospitality to french army, decimated during the siege.
Today only remain the ruins of “Castellaccio”, once Arab fortress and then became a prison which crushed down during the earthquake in 1693.
Today it is possible to visit the castle’s ruins, now property of municipality.
To get Aidone by highway Palermo-Catania, you have to get exit Mulinello, then carry on SS 117 bis, in the direction of Gela till the crossroads to Aidone. From here you can get The centre in a few Kilometres.
