The Lombardy Castle of Enna
The Castle of Lombardia (Lombardy Castle) can be considered like one of the biggest castles in Sicily because of its dimension.
Recently it has been introduced in the first hundred italian most beautiful castles.
The name of the castle probably comes from the lombard people’s settlement in the Norman age, but its establishment dates back to the Sicanian age, when was here founded the dwelling of Ctonies Divinity, then identified with the Greek Demetra and Kore and the Roman Goddesses Cerere and Proserpina.
It is placed on a more than 940m. tall hill and in ancient times it was considered an unbeatable fortress. The Castle, infact, has three sides naturally guarded by overhanging rocks which make its entry impossible to get.
The Castle of Lombardia was often modified: Arab made it a “Castrum”, then it was transformed in an imponent fortress by the Frederick II of Svevia  enginers; at last, Frederick III of Aragon used it like his own house.
The Castle of Lombardia has strong defensive walls and its made up of three big courts: the “ Court of Arm”, the “Court of Provenders” and “S. Martino’s Square”. It is still possible to see the “Parliamentary Room”, the base of the St. Martino’s Chapel, the nether regions, the granary and the water wells.
In the origin, it was defended by twenty towers, of which only six are today still visible.
From the major tower, the “Pisan Tower”, which is placed in S. Martino’s Square, we can be pleasured by one of most striking landscape in all Sicily.
