The Aragonese Castle of Piazza Armerina

The origin of the Aragonese Castle is dated back to the period between the 1392 and 1396.  Martino I il Giovane, king of Sicily, wanted this fortress for defensive purposes and as place for a person in charge; it was a statal castle so the castellan was nominated by the king. He, holding the political and military Aragona’s power, had to keep the feudatories’s anarchic aims at bay. The castle was also part of the economical scene of the town, since the lord of the castle imposed heavy taxes (castellany rights)  on the population. Since the 1438 and on we have no historical news about the castle up to the 1812, age in which the castellanies were suppressed and the feudal system concluded. After this date the castle was used as jail. Not long since it became private.
About the architecture, the Aragonese castle appears quite squat and not very slender, because of the missing top floor (of which some testimony are left). Some rests of the foundation, dating back to the fourteenth century, are still present. The plant is quadrangular and four towers, also quadrangular, are placed in the corners. One of these towers has been entirely rebuilt, it stands out for his decentralized position compared to the other. The only portal is the one turned to South; it’s strange that it was the main one because of its position; it was placed, in fact, in a side of the castle open to the enemies attack. The southern side is the only one with windows and battlements, while the other walls surfaces are smooth and without openings. When the castle was used as jail it was changed inside.
