The Castle of Favara

The Castle of Favara rises on a rock in the historical center of the city, in Cavour Square.
Built up in 1270, the “Palace”, so called for the square disposition of its components, was Federico II Chiaramonte’s residence and is one of the most important monuments of Agrigento province.
Favara, from the Arab “fawa-warah”, fount, owes very much to Chiaramonte Family for the building of this castle.
The actual lived center just arises around it.
Because of its not too high position, which didn’t permitted an optimal vision of the surrounding territory, the use of the fortress was not tightly military.
It seems the castle was anciently inserted in a plan made up of fortified walls and round towers, which could strongly resist to the enemy’s attacks.
The massive and high walls delimit the square plant of the structure.
In the outer side, it’s possible to observe a high  double lancet windows which lighten and throw the fortress.
The past splendour of the castle, was given by the double lancet windows, by the groin arch entry in the southern side and by an inner court, with square plan too.
Thorugh the entry big portal, we access to the rooms of the ground floor, in the past used as warehouse and service houses and which present a barrel voult and permitt the access to the inner court, through lancet doors. From here, by using a stair, we arrive to the residential level from which it is possible to admire the groin portal with a romantic architrave and the chapel made up of an arab cover and a gothic arcade, which represents the most interesting element of the all fortress.
The set up of the first level shows an overlap of different structural elements, before of medieval and then of the Reinaissance origins, which had modified the primal structure.
Under the court of the castle there is a mysterious tunnel, object of a popular legend.
It is possible to visit the castle, now restored and municipal property, according to this time table:
