The Arab Castle of Burgio

The Arab Castle of Burgio is placed in Castle Square, in the historical center of one of the most ancient towns in the Agrigento province.
The origin of this fortress is unsure, maybe it is Arab according to the scholars.
It has  an enviable strategic position, isolated on a rock and skirted by two torrents: Garella and Tina, which create around the tower a natural ditch.
Since XIV century till the abolition of Feudalism the castle was the residence of the feudal families, Peralta, Cardona, Gioeni and Colonna, and it was then used as a prison.
The tower, in good conditions, has a rectangular plant (20x12mt) and it is 17 metres high.
The ogival arch entry is placed on the principal side, like three windows.
On the east side, instead, is a double lancet window.
The internal environment is desposed in three levels: the ground floor, like the intermediate level, is divided in three communicating rooms and it presents a little niche on a side which probably is a chapel. The last level, instead, is an only environment and it is connected to the intermediate level by a stair escavate in the wall.
A complex of clay pipes inside the walls, warranted an efficient system of drainage.
Today it is possible to visit the castle, now restored and municipality properties.
