The Norman Castle of Motta Sant’Anastasia |
|
The Norman Castle of Motta Sant’Anastasia is rocked on a cliff which overlooks the Piana of Catania and is one the the most charming place to visit in Sicily. In reality, this square plant structure XII century dated, is a “dongione”, that is the principal part of a castle where the commandant or the lord lived. Built up on the base of a previous Arab structure on Ruggero of Altavilla’s order around 1704, the castle had defensive purposes, thanks principally to its enviable strategic position which permitted to overlooks the coast and the plan all around Catania. The structure is divided in three levels in a total height of 21 metres. Two entries permit the access to the ground floor, where there is a cistern used to catch the rain water. The ground floor was used like military accomodation. The first floor, which is provided with large lancet windows had, instead, housing function and was the commandant’s residence. While in the third level we find a lancet arch which supports the superior terrace where a perfectly preserved battlement is present. Today it is possible to visit the municipal property castle, free entrance from Monday to Friday, from 09.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. To get Motta Sant’Anastasia from Catania is necessary to take the S.S. 121 to Adrano till the Motta Sant’Anastasia exit.
